Bordaberry attacks the right to abortion and “those who call themselves Batllistas”

Crosses between Pedro Bordaberry and Ciudadanos por Bustillo and the Marset case. What did they say?

Former senator for the Colorado Party, Pedro Bordaberrywrote a controversial column that was published this Sunday and attacked the decriminalization of abortion and the right to it, which earned him criticism from various areas, starting with the PC itself.

Bordaberry appealed to a phrase attributed to José Batlle y Ordóñez, saying: «You have to save the life of the child in its hazardous beginning. How many perish in the womb of the mother who did not dare to face her accusers and seeks in death for her and her illegitimate son a safe refuge from her? The Colorado deputy, Ope Pasquet, has come out in defense of the historic Colorado leader (Batlle) and has pointed out that he never expressed a position for or against abortion, but he did fight all his life for the rights of women and children.

Pasquet stressed that criminal law is not the appropriate tool to deal with the problem of an unwanted pregnancy and pointed out that the situation of secrecy and stigmatization that occurred before the law only favored a hypocritical society that tolerated that situation. In addition, he has questioned Bordaberry’s vision in relation to euthanasia, pointing out that it is about respecting the freedom of people to put an end to their own suffering, resorting if they need help to die “without pain, without violence and in peace”.

Criticism of Bordaberry from all sides

The national director of Telecommunications and Colorado presidential candidate, Guzman Acosta and Larahas also come out in defense of the decriminalization of abortion and euthanasia and has criticized the Bordaberry’s “conservative” vision.

the leader Daisy Machadoa member of the National Executive Committee (CEN) and a self-described feminist, has pointed out that the phrase attributed to Batlle y Ordóñez mentions mothers who, for fear of facing religious prejudices about illegitimate children, took their own livesbut does not speak of the decriminalization of abortion, a law that Bordaberry questions.

“They get angry because of a column in which I quoted Batlle when he said that it was necessary to ‘protect the child who perishes in his mother’s womb’ because of her decision,” Bordaberry replied, who, after being the target of criticism, concluded: “As a friend says: you have to read more about Batlle and Ordóñez and not those who call themselves Batllistas.”
