In order to discuss the importance of urban mobility and democratic access to cities, the book Mobility and Quality of Life in metropolises: Zero Tariff, Modal Integration and Metropolitan Authority will be launched this Monday (8), at 6pm, at Livraria da Vila, located in Jardim Paulista, in São Paulo.
The work, by Editora Jandaíra, points to mobility in cities as an important factor for people’s quality of life, especially the peripheral population.
“In the book, I start from these diagnoses to argue that mobility is a structuring vector of inequalities. The city is not democratic when the tariff determines who can study, work, walk with their children or see a doctor”, explains the author, São Paulo state deputy Mário Maurici (PT-SP).
The parliamentarian also pays tribute to the person who planted the seed of zero tariffs in Brazil: engineer Lúcio Gregori, who created the project when he was secretary of Luiza Erundina’s administration at São Paulo city hall.
“What Lúcio Gregori left us was not just a project, but a method of thinking about the city that starts from the obvious, but is rarely adopted, that transport is a right, not a commodity. That, with more mobility, people have access to more opportunities”, says Maurici.
During the book launch event, the deputy will be present to talk to the public and sign copies. The launch will also bring together parliamentarians, academics, public managers, diplomats and representatives of popular movements.
