Bolsonaro’s former Justice Minister, Anderson Torres, was arrested today Saturday in Brasilia for his connection to the attacks that shocked Brazil and the world on January 8.
Former President Bolsonaro is also under investigation by the prosecution, according to local media.
Torres was Secretary of Security of the capital the day that thousands of Bolsonaristas assaulted the headquarters of public power.
Removed from office, he was on vacation in the United States, from where he announced on social networks that he would return to Brazil to appear before the courts and defend his innocence.
According to local media, it landed this Saturday morning, a day after the current Justice Minister, Flavio Dino, said that international cooperation mechanisms would be activated if Torres did not return voluntarily.
Government of Brazil believes that there was “planning” in riots last Sunday
Alexandre de Moraes, a Supreme Court judge, ordered his arrest for “intentional collusion” with the violent acts of Bolsonaro’s followers.
Moraes himself authorized yesterday, at the request of the Attorney General’s Office, to include Bolsonaro in the investigations into who were the instigators and masterminds of the attack.
From the United States, Bolsonaro has said he had no connection with the demonstrations, and through his lawyer he defended his innocence.
An ally of Bolsonaro, Torres will also have to explain about a draft presidential decree seeking to alter the result of the 2022 elections.
