The former President of the Republic, Jair Bolsonaro, underwent surgery this Thursday (25) to treat a bilateral inguinal hernia. Carried out in a private hospital in Brasília (DF), with authorization from Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), the surgical procedure took more than three hours and, according to the doctors responsible, went as planned.
“The procedure took place without any complications,” surgeon Cláudio Birolini told journalists, after the end of the operation and Bolsonaro’s transfer to the room where he will remain under observation for the next few days.
According to Birolini, the hernia identified on the left side of the abdomen was still in its initial phase, being smaller than the one on the right side, but the medical team concluded that it would be more appropriate to operate on it now, to try to avoid future surgery to treat the problem.
“If we don’t solve it now, in a few months he will [Bolsonaro] He was going to develop a clinical picture in the same way as the one he developed on the right side. So, the correction has already been made. [da hérnia inguinal bilateral] on both sides”, added the surgeon, explaining that, during the surgery, carried out with the help of general anesthesia, the medical team implanted a polypropylene mesh on the inside of the abdominal wall, reinforcing it to prevent the occurrence of other hernias.
The medical team’s initial forecast is that Bolsonaro will take between five and seven days to recover from surgery. During this time he will be under observation, undergoing physiotherapy and other procedures in order to avoid, among other things, vascular problems, such as possible venous thromboembolism, that is, the formation of clots.
Furthermore, doctors will reevaluate the need for a procedure to try to resolve the recurring hiccups that have been affecting the former president for months.
“This is a central point [do acompanhamento do paciente, hoje, além da cirurgia [da hérnia]”, declared cardiologist Brasil Ramos Caiado, explaining that the hiccups are a concern because they affect and impair Bolsonaro’s breathing and sleep, generating additional fatigue and hindering the former president’s recovery.
“In the post-operative period, with the body needing to recover, it is practically being attacked by this hiccup”, commented Caiado, revealing that, in the coming days, with Bolsonaro hospitalized, the medical team will “boost” the medication and explore other alternatives to try to solve the problem without the need to subject Bolsonaro to another surgery.
“We will observe, over the next few days, whether or not this procedure is necessary [cirúrgico]. We’ll probably do this on Monday [29]which is a good amount of time for him to be able to respond to the medication.”
Surveillance
Convicted of the coup plot that culminated on January 8, 2023 and the attack on the Three Powers (Executive, Legislative and Judiciary), Bolsonaro is serving a sentence of 27 years and three months in prison.
THE former president is fulfilling his sentence detained at the Federal Police Superintendency (PF), in Brasília, since November 25, as ordered by Minister Alexandre de Moraes.
Authorized to undergo surgery this Thursday, he was taken to the hospital by PF agents, yesterday morning (24), and accompanied by the former first lady, Michelle Bolsonaro.
By court order, while he is hospitalized, Bolsonaro must be monitored 24 hours a day, with two agents stationed at the room door, in addition to other teams inside and outside the hospital.
