Bolsonaro should be discharged this Thursday and return to his cell at the PF

Doctors accompanying former president Jair Bolsonaro, hospitalized since Christmas Eve for surgical proceduresupdated his health status and confirmed discharge for this Thursday morning (1st), if there are no new health problems. With this, the former president, sentenced to 27 years in prison in the coup plot process, will be able to return to the cell where he is serving his sentence, at the Federal Police Superintendence (PF), in Brasília.Bolsonaro should be discharged this Thursday and return to his cell at the PF

“In principle, the discharge is already scheduled, barring any complications”, assured cardiologist Brasil Caiado, from Hospital DF Star, in an interview with journalists, on Wednesday afternoon (31). “We plan to arrive early [na quinta]carry out the routine assessment and, if there is nothing different, inform the PF superintendence, then it is no longer up to us”, he added.

Jair Bolsonaro was admitted to the private hospital in the federal capital on December 24th. He underwent inguinal hernia surgery the following day..

The former president was authorized by Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), to leave the Federal Police Superintendency to carry out the procedures.

Hiccups and antidepressants

During the week, to try to contain a persistent bout of hiccups that has affected him for months, Bolsonaro also underwent at least three surgeries to block the phrenic nerve, responsible for controlling the diaphragm, the muscle responsible for breathing.

“We noticed that blocking the diaphragm on both sides reduced the intensity of the hiccups, but did not stop the hiccups. This shows that the stimulus is not from the neck down, but from the neck up. It is probably a stimulus originating in the central nervous system, which means there is no point in performing a definitive nerve block”, explained surgeon Claudio Birolini.

Treatment, according to the specialist, will continue with medication and other alternative therapies.

Hiccuping attacks, according to doctors, are the moments that most aggravate the former president’s psychological state. “We notice a considerable worsening in moments of prolonged hiccups. The difference in the emotional and physical state, he becomes very depressed during the nights or days he spends with hiccups. It’s the worst stage. He already arrived here in a more depressed emotional state, but it fluctuates a lot”, evaluated Caiado.

The former president’s discomfort is also being treated with antidepressant medication, the medical team revealed. “The president himself asked to use some antidepressant medication, so it was introduced and we hope that this treatment will have some effect in a few days”, stated Birolini.

Self-care in prison

Upon discharge, it will be up to the former president himself to carry out self-care in the PF cell, although doctors can visit him whenever necessary or requested.

“He [Bolsonaro] He is more disciplined, he understands the importance of collaborating with his diet, not lying down after eating, which is a point that generates a lot of reflux, eating more appropriately, more fractionally. All our recommendations, he is very disciplined and always follows”, said Brasil Caiado.

In the PF, Bolsonaro’s cell measures around 12 square meters (m²) and was recently renovated . The space has white walls, a single bed, closets, side table, television, minibar, air conditioning and a window, as well as a private bathroom.

In the latest medical bulletin, released this Wednesday, shortly after the doctors’ conference, DF Star Hospital reported that the former president improved from the hiccups and underwent an upper digestive endoscopy, an examination that showed the persistence of esophagitis and gastritis.

Another problem faced by Bolsonaro is obstructive sleep apnea. To address this, the former president began using a medical device called CPAP, which provides a constant flow of air through a mask to keep the airways open, preventing respiratory arrest and snoring.

“It’s the second night he’s been using the mask, the CEPAP, he adapted well, he said he slept better and it’s recommended that he continue to use it while he’s in prison. In fact, he’s going to leave here with the device”, informed Claudio Birolini.
