In an interview with RCN Radio, The leading actress Karla Sofía Gascón shared details about the preparation process for her role in this musical film.
“It has been an immense job, especially in this aspect, because I had no idea about, really, music. I am not a singer and I had to work a lot on vocal training, singing training, breathing training and, furthermore, on two different tessituras, because I play two different characters that are the same in this film. One with the deepest voice, another with the thinnest voice,” Gascón confessed.

Regarding his connection with the Mexican history that the film tells, Gascón expressed: “I’m practically Mexican too. I have lived there for years, I have residency and could obtain nationality. “I feel more Mexican than the nopal.”

Director Jacques Audiard also spoke about the experience of making a musical that addresses a Latin American reality.
“I had been wanting to do a musical comedy for years and also something that reflected Latin America. Finally, the opportunity was given to combine both ideas,” he explained.

Audiard commented on the choice of trans actress Karla Sofia Gascón as the protagonist: “I interviewed many Mexican trans actresses, but I couldn’t find the right one. I met Karla in Paris and it was an artistic crush. I knew immediately that she must be Emilia.”
Natalia Reyes, president of the Colombian Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences, highlighted the relevance of the film.
