Bogotá could face energy shortages in 2025 due to halt in projects

The mayor of Bogotá, Carlos Fernando Galán, referred to the challenges that the capital faces in terms of energy. According to the president, the city could face energy supply difficulties in 2025 and 2026 if there is no progress in the materialization of projects that guarantee the service.

This was the warning he made in his speech at the opening of the annual energy congress held by Acolgén, a space in which he also stressed the importance of the implementation of the Chivor II-Norte and Sogamoso projectswhich were due to be ready in 2015 and 2017, respectively.

“Today we have an installed capacity in the region of close to 3,500 megawatts and we have a demand of 3,100. That is a margin of 400, which according to experts is limited and leaves us very vulnerable,” Galan explained.

The mayor also recalled that the importance of bringing more energy to the capital is not only based on ensuring demand, but on the role it will play in the development of other key initiatives for its economic development. “There are 22 projects in Bogotá-region that have access to energy conditional on the advancement of these lines. We are talking about industrial and residential projects. Projects that the region needs and that we are attracting to generate competitiveness and employment, but that are being held back by these difficulties,” he highlighted.

Galán also stressed that the district administration is committed to the implementation of energy communities. However, he indicated that these would not be sufficient to cover current demand and demand in the coming years.

He also reaffirmed the Mayor’s commitment to jointly define with the actors involved the appropriate paths to advance in the achievement of these objectives, taking into account factors such as environmental impact and respecting institutional decisions. In this regard, he called on the Government to take urgent action.
