Following a meeting with the Mexican Bar Association on August 15, Bank of America highlighted concerns that the election of magistrates has a low level of citizen participation and that it is influenced by political parties, organized crime and the private sector.
“AMLO has mentioned that existing judges, those with tenure, could be allowed to stand as candidates for elections, in addition to the fact that the age range of 35 years and older is being eliminated,” BofA added.
Regarding other reforms to be presented in September, such as the elimination of some autonomous organizations, BofA said that these could have repercussions under the USMCA.
Furthermore, the ban on changing the status of CFE and Pemex, as well as the ban on the import of genetically modified corn, will also be a source of controversy with Mexico’s trading partners under the trade agreement.
