MADRID, Spain.- The body of the basketball player Leydis Oquendo, deceased Last October 5 in El Salvador, he arrived in Cuba after a complicated repatriation process.
Former basketball player Lázaro Romero, a friend of Oquendo, explained to Full Swing: “It has been a very complicated process from the beginning. First, the paperwork process for the repatriation and the journey of the body to Cuba from San Salvador. Then came the hurricane that passed through Central America and later other logistical situations that delayed the arrival quite a bit.
The renowned player from Camagüey Yordanis Jaca went to pick up the body at the Calzada y K funeral home in Havana, “after the important initial management carried out by Julio Altunaga and Dalia Henry at the José Martí airport.”
From there she was transferred to Florida, Camagüey, her hometown, to be watched over by her family and friends.
This Sunday, the journalist Felix Anazco Ramos, when sharing images of the funeral, he expressed: “In Florida they honor one of their most beloved daughters, the basketball player Leydis Oquendo. This girl planted so much good in her town and her sport, that in the House of Culture of that municipality, as also happened in El Salvador, hundreds of them came to fire her”.
Leydis Oquendo died at the age of 40 due to “a postoperative complication in El Salvador.” She had been operated on for a fibroma, but the postoperative process brought multiple complications and her unfortunate outcome was due to pulmonary thrombosis.
She was hired in the professional basketball league in El Salvador, where she recently finished as the top scorer in the local tournament.
Oquendo arrived in El Salvador in 2017, as part of the Santa Tecla club squad, belonging to the women’s basketball league of that Central American country.
