The veteran Argentine goalkeeper returns to his country after a final stage in the Italian Venice
The ‘Chiquito’ was exercising with Racing de Avellaneda, the club in which he was trained, and now he signs with Xeneize
Boca Juniors announced this Monday the signing of Argentine goalkeeper Sergio ‘Chiquito’ Romerowhich occupied the goal of the Albiceleste team in the World Cups in South Africa 2010 and Brazil 2014, and arrives free after playing in the Italian Venice.
Romero, 35, was training at the Racing facilities, the club where he was trained, but had said that he did not want to sign for the Academy so as not to “cover” to the current goalkeepers.
“Boca asked me if I was free, available. And one has to think very well when you have the chance to play for a club like Boca.. I am happy to come to this institution. Coming to Boca is a step forward in my career,” Romero said at a press conference.
“Going to Venice was a great challenge as a footballer: going to a club where you know you are going to fight for the lower positions. Boca is the biggest club in Argentina and I have come to show that I am prepared, as I showed in the arc of the Argentine national team“, he added.
Boca Juniors signs Romero after the starting goalkeeper, Agustín Rossi, decided not to renew his contract, which expires in mid-2023. The managers of the Buenos Aires team usually prevent players whose contracts are about to expire from being available to the coach.
“I had proposals from the Premier. But together with my wife we understood that it was a very good possibility to come to Boca. I think it was one of the best decisions of my life”, said ‘Chiquito’.
Boca Juniors was eliminated in the round of 16 of the Copa Libertadores but it is in the round of 16 of the Argentine Cup.
In the Argentine League, Xeneize is eleventh with 18 points, seven behind the leader Atlético Tucumán.
