Boat with 253 Haitians stops in Ciego de Ávila

MADRID, Spain.- A boat with 253 Haitians trying to reach the United States called at the port of Kasasa, in Cayo Coco, Jardines del Rey, north of Ciego de Ávila.

As reported by the newspaper Granma This Monday, the migrants, including 31 children, were transferred to the Manuel Suárez Physical Education Teacher Training School (Ceballos 7), where they are receiving medical attention and food. The center was conditioned by Tomás Alexis Martín Venegas and Ania Francisco Malde, governor and lieutenant governor of Ciego de Ávila.

According to the information, a group of specialists from the Cuban Red Cross went to the place.

These Haitians will be assured “the organized, safe and voluntary return to their country of origin,” said the official media.

The landings by mistake in Cuba of Haitian migrants have been frequent in the last year. The most recent occurred on the 11th of this month. On that date, a boat full of Haitian migrants arrived at Ceiba Hueca, a coastal town in Granma province.

In June In 2022, two groups of Haitians arrived in Cuba through different ports. First, on the 18th of that month, a sailboat with dozens of migrants who were trying to reach the United States landed on the coast of Baracoa, in the Guantánamo province. A little over a week later, 178 Haitians landed in Cayo Francés, territory belonging to the municipality of Caibarién, in Villa Clara.

While in February 292 Haitian migrants landed in Ciego de Ávila, after the boat they were sailing in drifted after passing the Paso de los Vientos strait.
