Board of Directors of the National Party discussed a bill on Early Childhood with the president of INAU and deputy Cristina Lustemberg

At the request of deputy Armando Castaingdebat, the National Party Board received this Monday the deputy of the Broad Front, Cristina Lustemberg, and the president of INAU, Pablo Abdala, with the aim of addressing the bill on Early Childhood, which is under debate in the House of Representatives.

According to the articles of the initiative, it seeks to “strengthen the institutional framework and intersectoral work methodology for multidimensional treatment and the recognition, protection and guarantee of effective compliance with the rights of pregnant women and children up to six years of age.

“It is an issue that has to be part of the entire political system,” stressed the secretary of the Board, Castaingdebat. “It was necessary to create political awareness on an issue that affects our lives as Uruguayans,” he stressed.

“We had a very good meeting today; We highly emphasize the reception of the National Party. We are looking for an agreement of the entire political system with a design that has a greater impact”, affirmed Lustemberg, who asked that “this transcends whoever governs so that, when it is regulated, a much more effective public policy is designed”.

For his part, Abdala indicated that although “there were nuances” about the project, he stressed that “the time has come to make a definition and for the project to pass to the Senate.” And he pondered: “It would be a very important sign that political parties can agree on sensitive issues. This project is going in the right direction.”

“Hopefully, we can do our bit so that this initiative can move forward,” concluded the president of the Board of Directors, Pablo Iturralde, who valued the dialogue carried out this Monday at the Casa del Partido with the Broad Front legislator.

Lustemberg has already discussed the project with the Cabildo Abierto, the Colorado Party, the Independent Party and with the President of the Republic, Luis Lacalle Pou.

“We are looking for an agreement from the entire political system, with great controls on how the State designs policies and on budget allocation,” the deputy commented at a press conference after the meeting.

The project, called “Guarantees for early childhood, childhood and adolescence”, is under consideration by the Population and Development Commission of the Chamber of Deputies. “We voted on the project in general in June, this Thursday we are going to vote article by article,” he said.

Regarding the treatment in Parliament, Lustemberg indicated that he hopes that the project will be approved “quickly” in Deputies, adding that “the vice president of the Republic [Beatriz Argimón] She is also committed to the subject.”

“We all agree that the FA governments increased public social spending, but the design that public policy has today is not working properly so that Uruguay can make a qualitative leap,” he stressed.
