Solar-powered electricity generation projects in the states of São Paulo and Ceará, with financing of approximately R$1.14 billion, were approved by the National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES). The two complexes of the EDP and Powerchina groups, together, add approximately 402 MW of installed capacity to the national electricity system, with a physical guarantee of generation of 116.5 average megawatts (MW), enough energy to supply approximately 524 thousand homes.
With these new projects, BNDES has reached the milestone of R$11.8 billion in financing for photovoltaic plants since the first operation in 2017. So far, 23 projects have been approved, with almost 4.5 gigawatts (GW) of installed power and physical guarantee to serve more than 5 million homes.
From January 2023 to August this year alone, R$4.1 billion were approved for nine projects, totaling around 1.5 GW of installed power and the capacity to supply 1.6 million homes.
BNDES President Aloizio Mercadante said that “the investments reaffirm BNDES’ role as the world’s largest financier of renewable energy, according to Bloomberg’s ranking, and are aligned with President Lula’s government’s strategy to promote the energy transition in the country. Today, Brazil is already a leader in clean energy in the G20, with 89% of our electricity matrix clean and 49% of our energy matrix clean.”
