Peru has an export potential in United Kingdom with 31 items considered as ‘stars’ and another 129 classified as ‘promising’, considered the Center for Research on Global Economy and Business of the Association of Exporters (CIEN-ADEX).
During her participation in the Free Trade Agreement workshop between the United Kingdom and the Andean Countries, the head of Consulting and Projects at CIEN-ADEX, Lizbeth Pumasunco, explained that some products are blueberries (US$ 59 million) and grapes ( $50 million).
Added to this list are avocados (US$25 million), fishmeal (US$20 million), bananas (US$19 million), T-shirts (US$13 million), mangoes (US$5.8 million) and asparagus (US$ 5.6 million).
“Young consumers and families are very responsible with their diet, they are willing to pay for organic products. According to the Organic Market report, in 2021 sales (of organics) increased by 12.6%Pumasunco said.
Likewise, he indicated that the United Kingdom is an important world importer of avocados (representing 3.8% of the total), occupying position six, while in grapes it concentrates 6.3% and occupies position four.
“In 2021, Fair Trade certified products experienced a year-on-year growth of 13.6%, reaching a market size that exceeded one billion pounds”, he expressed.
Strengthening relationships
For his part, Julio Pérez Alván, president of Adex, highlighted the importance of trade agreements, particularly the one in force with the United Kingdom, mentioning the need to take advantage of and disseminate existing opportunities for both nations so that Peruvian businessmen enter that market.
He also pointed out that the United Kingdom is the main investor in infrastructure development, energy and financial transition in our country.
In addition, he stressed that since the bilateral agreement came into force, our exports have increased considerably. In 2021, Peru is the 87th world supplier of the United Kingdom, with a share of 0.04% of the total imported by that nation.
Shipments totaled US$ 1,345 million in 2021, reflecting a growth of 205.6% compared to 2020 (US$ 457.6 million).
“Fuels, minerals, fruits and vegetables are the three main products exported with US$ 881 million, US$ 85.6 million and US$ 11.8 million, respectively”, he pointed out.
Peru is the first supplier of fruits
For his part, the ambassador of the United Kingdom in Peru, Gavin Cook, highlighted that our country is the first Latin American supplier of fruit to Great Britain.
“Today, British families can enjoy Peruvian grapes, bananas, avocados and clothing made from alpaca”, he stated after recalling that from November 9 Peruvians will be able to visit their country without needing to apply for a visa.
Finally, he mentioned that they are working to spread the advantages of the trade agreement and make it accessible to all Peruvian actors who wish to expand their exports.
