Blanca Segovia Sandino Aráuz, daughter of Nicaragua’s national hero Augusto C. Sandino, died this Friday, December 23, at the age of 89, reported the country’s vice president, Rosario Murillo.

Sandino Aráuz, born on June 2, 1933, “was affected by health,” said Murillo, wife of Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega, through official media.

The dignitary did not offer details of the death of Sandino’s daughter, whom she also described as a “heroic defender of national sovereignty.”

In 2015, Nicaragua’s National Assembly (Parliament), controlled by the ruling Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN), awarded the “National Assembly” Medal of Honor to Sandino’s daughter.

Sandino Aráuz, who never knew his mother, who died the day of her delivery, died in a Nicaraguan hospital, the first lady said.

Sandino’s daughter, she had four children and lived in exile in Cuba between 1961 and 1979, during the Somoza family dictatorship. She will be buried in San Rafael del Norte, a municipality in northern Nicaragua, Murillo said.

Sandino was declared a national hero of Nicaragua because his fight helped oust the US military presence in the Central American country in the 1930s, and inspired the revolution that overthrew the Somoza family dictatorship in 1979.
