Blackouts are increasing in Mayabeque, says Empresa Eléctrica

MAYABEQUE, Cuba.- The Mayabeque Electric Company recently readjusted the electricity cuts (blackouts) in that province after the accident that occurred at the Matanzas Supertanker Base, as confirmed by CubaNet in a telephone call to User Support.

“The electricity cuts will be every six hours during the day and every four at night, but I can’t tell you the schedule that is being applied,” said a worker who identified herself as Magalys.

“The blackouts have worsened due to a generation deficit since the accident occurred in Matanzas,” he added.

Officially, the generation deficit affected Mayabeque in such a way that blackouts occurred every twelve hours, six without electricity, although this schedule was not respected even before the fire in Matanzas, due to “limited reserves,” according to the Mayabeque company. .

Accident in Matanzas

Since the night of Friday, August 5, the Cuban authorities have been trying to put out the large-scale fire that is consuming two fuel tanks at the Supertanqueros base in Matanzas. The incident occurred after lightning struck part of the facility.

The flames have not been extinguished since then. The fire has left 122 people injured, 16 firefighters missing and the authorities have already identified the first fatality, firefighter Juan Carlos Santana Garrido, who had been reported among the missing.

Santana Garrido remained for 15 years in the Special Fire Protection Command of the Camilo Cienfuegos Refinery, said Canal Caribe.

The authorities have worked since this Saturday so that the fire does not spread to the third tank, and the government even asked for international help on Saturday.

In this regard, official media announced that three flights arrived on the island this Saturday night, two from Mexico and one from Venezuela with “personnel trained for this type of incident.”
