A few days ago, President Gustavo Petro met in Bogotá with the head of the United States Southern Command, Laura Richardson, where they discussed issues such as the fight against drug trafficking, extradition as a tool to fight this crime, and the Amazon.
The support requested from that country to combat deforestation in that Colombian region has been met.
“This government is committed to protecting the Amazon rainforest. We have received three Black Hawk helicopters from the United States and they will be used by an elite body that will take care of the environment and fight crimes such as deforestation,” President Petro announced this Friday.
Three of these elements arrived, but there are 12 in total that the country will receive.
The Black Hawks will strengthen the fleet of the National Police, especially to reinforce preservation and protection tasks of the Colombian natural ecosystem.

According to the Sustainable Week Magazine, a first advance has already been achieved, resources in the order of 96 million dollars were obtained (in 2020), from the Global Environment Fund (GEF for its acronym in English).
That money should be invested to finance the Pact of Leticia for the Amazon. It has not been reported how that investment is going.
At that time, there was no presence of representatives from Venezuela, which shares this region, in the Petro government it will be sought that they join.
