Next Friday, November 25, the United States celebrates the black fridaythe date that opens the Christmas shopping season, and in which Peruvians can also purchase products on sale, through e-commerce platforms or in person, and then bring them into the country.
In order for these products to enter Peru without problems, the National Superintendence of Customs and Tax Administration (Sunat) offers you the following recommendations that will help you take better advantage of the available offers.
Online shopping
Before buying a product from abroad you must inform yourself here on those goods that are prohibited from entering the country. For example, used auto parts or drinks manufactured abroad with the name “pisco”.
You should also know which products require the authorization of another entity to enter our country:
- Smartphones or mobile devices. Although most of them are approved by the Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC), you must verify in this links if the cell phone that will be imported is previously approved. Cell phones for personal use (up to five units) may enter if they are approved, if they exceed that amount, they must have an admission permit from the MTC.
- Medicines, vitamin supplements and medical equipment. They require prior authorization from the General Directorate of Medicines, Supplies and Drugs (Digemid), which can be processed online here, consigning the prescription and prescription signed by a doctor. In accordance with Official Letter No. 355-2018-Digemid-DG-EA/Minsa, the entry of up to four units of cosmetics for personal use is allowed without the requirement of the Sanitary Registry.
- food and drinks that are going to be marketed also need the authorization of the General Directorate of Environmental Health (Digesa).
Products with a value of up to US$200 are exempt from taxes; Above that amount, and up to US$2,000, they pay a single fee of 4% plus IGV.
The easiest option to enter the purchased merchandise is fast delivery shipments (Courier) which, thanks to the digitization of the import process carried out by SUNAT, reduce the time it takes to authorize the entry of products and eliminate procedures for citizens and companies.
This type of shipment is one of the most requested by natural persons who carried out 77% of the operations and who, up to October, had already exceeded one million import declarations, a higher figure, even, than the results that had been registered before the pandemic.
Entry through luggage
In the case of citizens who make their purchases in the United States or another country and who, upon their return, require them to enter Peru, they must take into account the following:
Each passenger may bring goods for their use and consumption, as well as gifts for a total value not exceeding US$ 500, provided that due to their quantity, nature or variety it is presumed that they will not be destined for commerce.
Two cell phones and a laptop are allowed free entry. So that you do not exceed this limit, it is preferable that you register, when leaving the country, the telephone and laptop that you carry with you, approaching the Customs office located in the International Arrivals Hall, four hours before the departure of your flight. Remember that all mobile equipment must be approved.
For the entry of medicines, the prescription must be presented, which must have the Digemid seal. In the case of vitamins, above personal use, authorization from that entity is also required.
