Bishops call for hope amid crisis overwhelming Nicaragua

Monseñor Álvarez

Hierarchs of the Catholic Church in Nicaragua called on citizens to have hope for the difficult times they are living and also to be grateful to the people who help migrants and exiles to reach their destinations safely.

Monsignor Rolando Álvarez, Bishop of the Diocese of Matagalpa, made mention in his homily this Sunday about the situation of those who migrate to other countries for different reasons, including security or economic reasons and recalled that many lose their lives on the way.

“There are many who have started a path of pain and suffering, many brothers and sisters, entire families have begun their migration, their exile, because they did not find what is right for them in their land. (…) And while they undertake the very hard road, having, during the day, the inclement sun as a roof, at night the stars, the cold that touches the bone… ”, Álvarez mentioned.

In addition, he mentioned that many go hungry or get sick, and that they are victims of kidnapping or extortion. One of those thousands of cases is that of Ana Gabriela Nicaragua, a political prisoner who was kidnapped by the Jalisco Cartel in Mexico while trying to reach the United States to request political asylum.

Another eleven people were in the hands of the criminal group that was asking for a ransom of 5000 dollars for their release, as was Nicaragua, who saw how they took other people outside the group of hostages to torture them.

“We are mobilizing for Villa Hermosa, Tabasco, and the Jalisco cartel kidnaps us. Lots of men armed to the teeth; hooded, with bulletproof vests, with the coat of arms of Mexico on their uniforms, with high-caliber weapons, violent, they stop the vehicles in which we were going, intimidate the drivers, they lower us, and take us to a warehouse ”, said the released prisoner Nicaraguan politician in interview with CONFIDENTIAL.

“It will be your turn to start again, I ask you, migrant and exiled brothers, Do everything in the name of God and turn back, this time looking back, to thank all the hands that reached out in your favor, because there are, to give thanks for them, because goodness exists and is greater than evil, ”Álvarez said during the Eucharist.

The Archbishop of Managua, Monsignor Leopoldo Brenes, called on Nicaraguans not to lose hope, despite how difficult the situation is today with the country’s social crisis and the economic problems they may have.

“Many of us feel overwhelmed by the social crisis, not only national, but international. Overwhelmed and with pain in the face of so many confronted countries, overwhelmed by the political and economic side, by family tensions that often make us bow our heads, but the Lord tells us to get up, look ahead, look at the horizon. As Christians and good children, we cannot lose hope, ”added Brenes.
