SANTIAGO.- The auxiliary bishop of the local Archdiocese, Monsignor Carlos Tomás Morel, denounced the precarious conditions in which hundreds of inmates are found in the La Concepción prison, in the province of La Vega.
“A prison that was built to house 800 people, today has about two thousand people, crowded together and in totally inhumane conditions,” said Monsignor Morel Diplán, while delivering the homily at the Sunday mass that he presided at in the Santiago Apóstol Cathedral of here.
He indicated that the case of La Vega is added to all other prisons in the country, where the same unsanitary conditions prevail.
“Prisons should be places of hope, where people who enter can regenerate and rebuild their lives,” said the Catholic prelate.
He stated that unfortunately we are living in a society of indifference and blindness, where no one cares about the situations in which thousands of men and women in the world live.
“Very sad to know that we are living in a society of blindness, indifference and apathy, where we are only interested in the self and selfishness,” Monsignor Morel Diplán later noted.
He said he hopes that with the determined effort of the Government and the other sectors of the country, the conditions of the prisoners can change with the transformation of the prison system.
