Biosafety Committee will evaluate transgenic soy event presented by Anapo and Bioseres

Biosafety Committee will evaluate transgenic soy event presented by Anapo and Bioseres

The Food Biosafety Committee will evaluate the drought-resistant HB4 soybean event at the request of the Association of Oilseed and Wheat Producers (Anapo) to determine if it complies with current regulations, reported the Minister of Rural Development and Land, Remmy Gonzales.

“The previous month Anapo has made the request and the respective environmental, economic and safety evaluations have to be fulfilled, and if they meet the requirements established by the Biosafety Committee we would not have any problem. If (the event) will support increasing and guaranteeing the food of Bolivians, the norm established by the Constitution will be issued”, affirmed the authority, according to ABI.

“As Anapo we have submitted the request for the evaluation of the event in HB4 soybeans with resistance to drought within the framework of the Biosafety Regulation that is in force,” reported the general manager of the association of soy producers, Jaime Hernández, who specified that the presentation of the eventthe process that gives rise to the transgenic plant) was carried out jointly with the Argentine Bioseresobtainer of this technology.

This is the second time that Anapo has requested the HB4 evaluation. At the first opportunity, the process was withdrawn because the previous government of Evo Morales associated it with an exclusive use for the production of agrofuels.

“We had to abandon the process, because the event must be approved for agricultural and seed production, marketing and consumption in Bolivia”, detailed Hernandez.

Now, the same event was presented so that within the framework of the biosafety regulation, which requires a more extensive process, it is approved for agricultural production, consumption and internal and external marketing.

According to Gonzalez, for the approval of the application, an “international acceptance regulation” must be met that must respond to the productive, economic, social and environmental characteristics of each country.

The Biosafety Committee must establish procedures for the evaluation of transgenic events in soybeans, corn, wheat, cotton and sugar cane.

The soy growers did not present other evaluation requests before due to the position of the Morales administration against the use of genetically modified organisms in the country.

“As of 2019, we began negotiations with the companies that obtain the HB4 and Intacta technologies, Bioseres and Bayer, respectively, so that they are encouraged to prepare the technical information to support this year’s request),” Hernández recalled. For now, only Bioseres has been willing to move forward with the presentation of HB4 in soy“, he added.
