Petism refers to the possession of wild animals for the purpose of keeping them in captivity as pets and is a multi-causal phenomenon that dramatically threatens local fauna, warns the biologist of the Ministry of the Environment, Susan Marín.

He added that people raise these wild animals as if they were dogs and cats, moreover, this is inappropriate according to the contravention of our law.

“The behavior of the animal is changed and a condition known as imprinting is given, which is where the animal begins to create a dependency on the human being and when this animal wants to be reintroduced to a natural environment, it cannot be released immediately, but that it has to go through a rehabilitation process, since it changes its behavior, the way it acts and affects the biology of the species,” he explained.

When we talk about wild animals, we refer to the species that are in their natural environment that is adapted according to the evolution of being in a natural environment, of looking for food, has a development that does not need the human being.
