Binational agreement in the Chaco to continue working for access to water

A group of deputies showed interest in knowing details of a tilapia farming project in the lake of the Itaipú Binacional dam.

The deputies of the Colorado Honor Bench, Edwin Reimer (ANR-Boquerón); Pastor Soria (ANR-San Pedro); and Walter Harms (ANR-Itapúa), presented a draft resolution “Requesting reports from the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, within the framework of Law No. 4,050/2010 “On the Sustainable Development of Aquaculture”.

The objective of the parliamentarians is to gather official information about the feasibility of the sustainable production of exotic species of fish fauna (tilapia), in the lake of the Itaipu Binational Entity, through floating and submersible net technology in aquaculture production.

The planners ask this state portfolio to report if it has scientific-technical studies or management experiences in other countries on the sustainable production of aquaculture of exotic species in natural or modified watercourses.

In addition, they need to know if there are experimental trials with the use of technology in fish farming with floating and submersible nets in aquaculture production.

Another point, requested in the document, is that it inform if the country has a national aquaculture policy or plan; if the answer is positive, supporting copies are requested.

Lastly, they request information on whether the Itaipu Binational Lake can be considered as an area with a potential for aquaculture.

Once approved by the plenary, the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock will have a period of 15 days to send the requested answers.
