Bill proposes paid leave for pet deaths: here's how it would work

With the aim of recognizing the bond between a person and their pet, a new study came to light. bill that seeks to give days of mourning to Colombian employees who suffer the loss of their pet.

(Further: How long can you leave a pet alone at home?).

This initiative, promoted by Representative Alexandra Vásquez, responds to a growing recognition of animals as important members of families and to the need to address the grief that many people experience when their pets die.

Animals are a crucial part of human life and workers have the right to fire their pets.“Vásquez said through his social network X.

In this way, it would grant a paid leave of up to three working days, “recognizing ‘multispecies’ families”according to the representative.

How would it work?

There would be a Amendment to the Substantive Labor Code, specifically to Article 57to include a new special obligation for employers: to grant paid leave to those workers who suffer the death of their pet.

However, This license could not be obtained more than twice a year.In addition, employees must show relevant evidence of the death of their cat, dog or other pet.

The specific conditions for granting the leave will be determined by the employer in its Internal Labor Regulations.

Several studies have shown that grieving the loss of a pet can have a significant impact on a person’s mental and emotional health.similar to mourning for a human being. However, this does not guarantee that the project will succeed.

There have been several attempts in the past to grant bereavement leave for pets, but these have not made it past the first debate in Congress. It is hoped that this time will be different due to the impact that pets have on Colombian families.

The bill, promoted by Vásquez, was barely filed, so has a long way to go in the legislature.
