President Joe Biden said Tuesday that most Americans consider “weird” and is against owning military-style rifles, regularly used in massacres like the one at Nashville elementary school.

Most Americans think owning assault weapons is weird, it’s a crazy idea. They are against that,” he told reporters at the White House when asked about the new tragedy that put the country in mourning.

The attacker burst into The Covenant School in Nashville Christian elementary school with two assault riflesTennessee (southeast), and killed three children and three staff members before being shot dead by police officers.

Biden continued his criticism of assault weapons possession, lamenting the deaths “heartbreaking”, according to his statements in North Carolina, where he was visiting a semiconductor factory.“There’s nothing like losing a child,” said Biden, who lost a daughter in a car accident in 1972 and his adult son Beau to cancer in 2015.

In previous comments, Biden expressed his exasperation that Congress was not ending authorization for legal possession of semi-automatic rifleslike the popular AR-15, highlighting that it could not do more.

“I have used the full extent of my executive authority to do all things gun-related on my own. AIt’s time for Congress to act.“he told reporters.

The Democratic president has long called for Congress to ban, or at least restrict, the possession of these weapons designed to cause the maximum number of victims, but the Republicans, who now have a majority in the House of Representatives, oppose it.
