MIAMI, United States. — The United States government extended until 2024 the state of national emergency with respect to Cuba, which prevents unauthorized entry to the island of ships sailing under the flag of the northern country.
The Biden administration’s decision was released today in a proclamation signed by the US president himself.
“…, pursuant to section 202(d) of the National Emergencies Act (50 USC 1622(d)), I continue the national emergency with respect to Cuba and the emergency authority regarding the regulation of the anchoring and movement of vessels established in Proclamation 6867, as amended by Proclamation 7757, Proclamation 9398, and Proclamation 9699,” the document states.
The notice, which will be published in the Federal Register and transmitted to Congress, indicates that the presence of US vessels in Cuban territorial waters “continues to be detrimental to United States foreign policy because such entry could facilitate mass migration.” from Cuba”.
“It remains the policy of the United States that mass migration from Cuba would endanger the national security of the United States by posing a disruption or threat of disruption of the international relations of the United States,” the statement added.
The state of national emergency with respect to Cuba was declared on March 1, 1996, a few days after the shooting down by the Cuban regime of two planes belonging to the organization Brothers to the Rescueoccurred on February 24 of that year.
“On February 26, 2004, through Proclamation 7757, the national emergency was extended to deny monetary and material support to the Cuban government. According to the statement, “the Cuban government has not demonstrated that it will refrain from the excessive use of force against US ships or aircraft that may participate in commemorative activities or peaceful protests in northern Cuba.”
