MÉRIDA, Mexico – Shortly after announcing that he is dropping out of the US election race and will not seek re-election, US President Joe Biden has given his support for Vice President Kamala Harris to be his replacement on the presidential ticket.

“My first decision as our party’s nominee in 2020 was to choose Kamala Harris as my vice president. And it has been the best decision I have ever made. Today, I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be our party’s nominee this year. Democrats: it’s time to unite and defeat Trump. Let’s do it.” tweeted.

Biden’s endorsement is a boost for Harris’s intentions to be his replacement, but she will still have to be ratified at the Democratic convention next August.

Biden He resigned this Sundayafter weeks of speculation, to run for re-election.

“Although my intention has been to run for re-election, I believe that it is best for my party and the country that I resign and focus solely on fulfilling my obligations as president for the remainder of my term,” reads a statement posted on the president’s X account.

Biden thanked Vice President Harris for being an “extraordinary partner in this work” and boasted about what he had accomplished during his tenure.

“America is stronger than ever. We made historic investments to rebuild our nation, to lower prescription drug costs for seniors, and to make health care accessible to record numbers of Americans,” he added.

The president also thanked his campaign team and said he will speak this week to give details of his decision.

“There is nothing that America cannot do, if we do it together. We just have to remember that we are the United States of America,” he concluded.

The decision puts an end to weeks of speculation and doubt within the Democratic Party that began on June 27 after the president’s hesitant performance during the electoral debate that pitted him against Trump.

Although the president’s initial decision had been to silence criticism and continue in the race, the American press had begun to report in recent days that Biden was losing key support within the party such as that of former President Obama or former Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi.
