US President Joe Biden urged G20 members on Monday to increase their efforts to combat hunger and poverty in the world and to encourage private companies in their countries to mobilize large-scale capital for this purpose.

Biden took advantage of his intervention in the first session of the G20 summit, which began this Monday in Rio de Janeiro, precisely with the debates on fight hunger, poverty and social inequalities, to ask for greater efforts from the world’s largest economies in eradicating these problems.

The US president said several countries need financial and technical support to combat hunger because they have been forced to choose between investment and debt repayment.

He also stated that the problems generated by poverty have been exacerbated due to the crisis that caused the covid-19 pandemic, to armed conflicts in several countries and even due to climate changes.

Regarding the efforts of the United States in this regard, he stated that it is a priority of his Government and that in the last four years the world’s largest economy has invested 160 billion dollars in global development.

“From the first day of my administration, this issue was put at the forefront,” said Biden, who will leave the White House in January for Republican leader Donald Trump to take over.

The summit of the G20 heads of state It began precisely with the launch of the Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty, an initiative of the Brazilian president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, to which 147 members have already joined, including 81 countries and 24 international organizations.

The United States is one of the founding members of the initiative along with all other members of the G20, except for Argentina, whose president, Javier Milei, rejects the sustainable development agendawhich seeks to end hunger, empower women and stop climate change, among other objectives.

The Alliance was born with commitments already assumed by some 70 countries and international organizations to promote nearly 40 specific projects that plan to benefit some 500 million people with income transfers and food in schools for some 150 million children.
