Commissioners will meet three days a week; public hearings are being considered
Santo Domingo.- The bicameral commission in charge of studying the bill which declares the need for the constitutional reform held its first meeting today, in which it outlined the working methodology.
The senators and deputies present agreed to invite the legal advisor of the Executive Branch, Antoliano Peralta, to the next meeting scheduled for Monday at 3:00 p.m. The purpose is for the official to explain the purpose, scope and nature of the piece.
Offering details, the president of the bicameral commission, Pedro Catrain, said that constitutional experts will be invited and there is the possibility of holding public hearings.
The commissioners will meet three days a week: Mondays at 3:00 p.m. and Thursdays and Fridays at 10:00 a.m.
“The communication from the President of the Republic was read, the complete proposal, and Title 14 of the Constitution was also read, which establishes the competence and methodology of this commission in accordance with the Constitution. This was read in full and is recorded in the minutes,” Catrain said.
The meeting took place amid disagreements among congressmen over the issues of the Executive Branch’s proposal, especially the reduction in membership fees for deputies.
The bill declaring the need to reform the Constitution seeks to guarantee the constitutional stability of the presidential election rules; strengthen the constitutional autonomy of the Public Prosecutor’s Office; adjust the number of deputies; and unify the elections.

For the Upper House, the bicameral commission that will study the constitutional reform project is made up of Pedro Catrain (PRM-Samaná), president; Julito Fulcar (PRM-Peravia), Omar Fernandez (FP-National District); Ramon Rogelio Genao (PRSC-La Vega), Cristobal Venerado Castillo (PRM-Hato Mayor), Felix Bautista (FP-San Juan), Antonio Taveras Guzman (PRM-Santo Domingo), Franklin Romero (PRM-Duarte) and Lia Inocencia Diaz de Diaz (PRM-Azua).
Meanwhile, the Chamber of Deputies’ delegation is made up of Olfany Mendez, Vice President; Julio Cesar Beltre, Soraya Suarez, Danilo Diaz, Rogelio Genao Lanza, Eugenio Cedeno, Elias Wessin Chavez, Mateo Evangelista Espaillat, Carlos Perez, Rafael Tobias Crespo, Carmen Ligia Barcelo, Kimberly Taveras, Mayobanex Martinez, Onabel Aristy, Anibal Diaz, Francisco Rodolfo Villegas, Ramon Bueno Patino and Robinson Diaz.
