The sixth (6) started well for Brazilian tennis player Beatriz Haddad Maia who recorded her first victory of the season, in the WTA 1000 qualifier in Doha (Qatar). With the right to bike (triumph with a double 6/0), the São Paulo number 68 in the world defeated the host Mubaraka Al-Maimi (unranked in professional tennis) – the Qatari athlete played at the invitation of the tournament organizers. The triumph ended a sequence of three defeats for Bia in debuts at the beginning of the year (WTA Adelaide, Australian Open and WTA Abu Dhabi).Bia Haddad scores 1st victory of 2026 in Doha WTA qualifier

Brazilian quintet debuts at 9pm in the Davis Cup

With an eye on the final phase of the Davis Cup, the main international competition between nations, the Brazilian team begins the qualifiers (classifying phase) against the host Canada, at 9pm this Friday (6), in the city of Vancouver. Amarelinha will enter the court without the number 34 in the world, João Fonseca from Rio, and also without the duo of Marcelo Melo and Fernando Romboli, who ended their partnership last month. On the Canadian side, the absences will be Felix Auger-Aliassime (8th in the ranking) and Denis Shapovalov (25th).

The Brazilian quintet, led by coach Jaime Oncins, is made up of João Lucas Reis, Gustavo Heide, Matheus Pucinelli, Rafael Matos and Orlando Luz. This Friday (6) there will be two singles games and on Saturday (7), starting at 4pm, there will be doubles and singles matches. If at the end of the four games there is a tie, a singles match will be held to decide the winner.

The qualifying phase (qualifiers) comprises two eliminatory phases. Whoever comes out on top in the Brazil x Canada duel will face the winner of the clash between France and Slovakia. Another 22 countries compete simultaneously for the qualifiers in the following duels: Chile x Serbia; Germany x Peru; Croatia x Denmark; Ecuador x Australia; Norway x Great Britain; Bulgaria x Belgium; Japan x Austria; India x Netherlands; Republic of Korea x Argentina; Hungary x United States; and Czech Republic x Sweden.

Brazilians and Canadians have already faced each other six times in Copa América: there were four victories for Amarelinha against two of their opponents. Brazil’s best performances in the Davis Cup came in 1992 and 2000, when the country bowed out in the semi-finals.
