Bia Haddad loses singles, but continues in doubles in Melbourne

Brazilian tennis player Beatriz Haddad Maia said goodbye this Saturday to the women’s singles match in the third round of the Australian Open, in Melbourne. The São Paulo native, number 17 in the world, was defeated by Russian Veronika Kudermetova (75th) by 2 sets to 0 (partial scores of 6/4 and 6/2), after almost two hours of play. Bia, the only Brazilian remaining in Melbourne, returns to the court tonight for the second round of the doubles tournament. Alongside German Laura Siegemund, Bia will face the pair of Italian Lucia Bronzetti and Ukrainian Anhelina Kalinina. The match is scheduled to start at 10:30 pm (Brasília time) this Saturday (18). This was the second year in a row that Bia suffered a setback in the third round of the singles bracket (the duel precedes the round of 16). Even so, Bia is the only Brazilian among women to win singles in the Open Era (started in 1968). Previously, in 1964 the country was runner-up with the iconic Maria Esther Bueno.

Other goodbyes

The duo of Orlando Luz and Frenchman Gregoire Jacq also said goodbye to Melbourne today after a setback in the second round. They were eliminated from the dispute due to the partnership of Polish Jan Zieliński and Belgian Sander Gillé, by 2 sets to 0, with partials of 7/6 (7-2), 4/6 and 6/3).

On Friday (17), the new duo of São Paulo’s Luisa Stefani and North American Peyton Steams also said goodbye to the Grand Slam after a double 6/2 defeat to the partnership of China’s Shuai Zhang and Serbia’s Kristina Mladnovic.

In the mixed doubles competition, Marcelo Melo from Minas Gerais, in partnership with Taiwanese Hao-Ching Chan, stopped in the first round. They lost their debut to Australians Kimberly Birrell and John Patrick Smith, by 2 sets to 0, with partials of 7/6 (7-5) and 6/3,
