Between internal tensions, DC opts for Approval “to move forward, to grow, to believe again”

Starting at 5:00 p.m. this Wednesday, the Christian Democracy began the National Board of the party in order to determine the position of the phalanx before the exit plebiscite on September 4. This in the midst of the diversity of crossed positions within the party.

It should be noted that there were more than 400 militants summoned throughout the country, who met electronically and after four hours of intense debate and various unchecks, managed to agree on which option they will support in the September plebiscite.

With a participation of 83.74% in the National Board -which represents 341 total votes- the Christian Democracy opted for Approval. This, after 63.53% -216 votes- supported the constitutional proposal of the Convention. Meanwhile, 36.47% -124 votes- were aligned with the Rejection option.

The meeting was led by the DC national table, chaired by the mayor of La Granja, Felipe Delpin, who led the deliberation in person from the community headquarters and after the result called those who have demonstrated for another option ” be democrats until it hurts” and respect the agreement reached by the National Board.

Despite the fact that the party determined the option to support, in any case, there were representatives who did not align themselves with the decision of the DC: Senator Ximena Rincón, Senator Matías Walker, who stated that they will reject the proposal of the Fundamental Charter.

On the other hand, through a written statement, they communicated that the political vote of the DC is inclined to “approve the structural transformations of the Chilean reality. The Christian Democracy reiterates its commitment to have a new Constitution that reaffirms the universal value of the human rights, democracy, the rule of law, the separation of powers and the rejection of all forms of violence,” they added.

Along the same lines, they maintained that “all Christian Democrats are in favor of writing a new Constitution. We have shades of difference. In some aspects these differences are important, in others they are minor, but in what there are not two voices is in affirming that The 1980 Constitution must end, because this is the focus of division, of abuses that have not been able to be eliminated, of an economic concentration that is the pillar of inequality and despair”.

“We appreciate that the constitutional proposal establishes that Chile will be a social and democratic state of rights; that it promotes a catalog of social rights that puts the human person at the center; that it promotes decentralization in a modern state; that economic freedom is maintained, a greater role of the State and greater protection of the environment and nature,” they indicated.

“We approved to move forward, to respond to the mobilized people who demanded the most profound change: a new Constitution that accounts for this modern Chile, but that was not capable of providing opportunities to all its sons and daughters, that allowed abuse and collusion, which allowed to do, which incubated the discomfort that broke out on October 18, 2019 and which finds in the Constitutional Convention process, a democratic, parity, inclusive response”, they stated.

“Approve, represents the future and the challenge of building from diversity, Approve, to move forward, to grow, to believe again,” they sentenced.
