Bettsy Chávez: Judiciary extends her preventive detention for 15 months

BETTSY CHÁVEZ

The Judiciary decided to increase the preventive detention measure against Betssy Chavez Chino, former chief of staff of the government of Pedro Castillo.

As recalled, Chávez has been deprived of her freedom since June 2023 after being accused, along with Castillo, of the alleged crime of rebellion.

According to the Public Ministry, the former premier could flee and thus avoid the criminal proceedings against her if she were free, which is why initially it was requested to extend the measure for an additional 18 months.

However, today the supreme judge of preparatory investigation Juan Carlos Checkley Soria ordered that the period be 15 months and will govern from December 20, 2024 to March 19, 2026.

The deputy supreme prosecutor in charge of the prosecution, Galinka Meza, argued that there is a need to extend the measure due to the number of procedural actions that will be carried out in the oral trial that could last more than a year.

The investigation by the Public Ministry indicates that Betssy Chávez would have played a key role in Pedro Castillo’s failed coup d’état on December 7, 2022.

According to testimonies, including the TV Perú reporter, Chávez coordinated the broadcast of the Message to the Nation where Castillo announced the dissolution of Congress. Furthermore, it is indicated that Chávez had previously drafted the law decree that supported this action.
