Luis Roberto Barranzuela, lawyer of the former president of the Council of Ministers Betssy Chavezrenounced his legal defense after learning that his client was asylumd by Mexico.
The lawyer’s decision was announced during the hearing of the oral trial against Chávez Chino for the alleged crime of rebellion. Given this, he reported that his client stopped communicating with him.
“Madam Magistrate, I wanted to cause an incident. It is public knowledge that the young lady has been granted asylum in the embassy of the United Mexican States. In this sense, I want to record that we have tried to communicate with Miss Betssy Chávez until yesterday, without obtaining a response. Consequently, I could not continue with the defense, although I will remain until the public defense is appointed,” he said.
In the middle of the oral trial, and after being absent from several hearings, Betssy Chávez requested political asylum in Mexico. The Mexican Foreign Ministry confirmed that it was granted and that it is protected in the diplomatic residence located in San Isidro.
Peruvian Foreign Minister Hugo de Zela announced that Peru has broken diplomatic relations with Mexico, describing the asylum as an “unfriendly act” and interference in internal affairs. For their part, officials from the Mexican Foreign Ministry denied that interference had been committed and affirmed that asylum is a right that corresponds to the asylum country to decide.
