Betssy Chávez’s lawyer resigns in the middle of the hearing and assures that he was not aware of the asylum request in Mexico

Betssy Chávez's lawyer resigns in the middle of the hearing and assures that he was not aware of the asylum request in Mexico

The lawyer of former minister Betssy Chávez, Luis Barranzuela, he resigned from his defense after learning through the media of the Asylum granted to the former official at the Mexican embassy. The decision comes after the lawyer failed to communicate with Chavez, situation that, as he explained, prevented him from continuing with the preparation of his defense.

“Madam Magistrate, I wanted to create an incident, it is public knowledge that Miss Betssy Chávez Chino has been granted asylum in the embassy of the United Mexican States. In that sense, and seeing that the doctor who I do not know if she is from the public defense is present, I want to report that we have been trying to communicate with Miss Chávez until yesterday,” he said.

“Even yesterday I contacted her phone at 1:21 and she did not answer me, then we learned through the media that she had been asylum in the Mexican embassy. Consequently, I could not continue a defense, because this defense is being prepared and has been prepared since the month of March. However, in order not to leave her defenseless, I will continue until you decide if the public defense takes over,” he added.

The lawyer said that his withdrawal responds to the impossibility of coordinating with Chávez and the lack of information about his current situationbut specified that he will provisionally continue with the case until the public defense formally assumes the representation of the former minister.

In this regard, the magistrates decided to reject Barranzuela’s resignation and ordered that he continue to be in charge of Chávez’s defense until the end of the trial, despite the former minister’s asylum. This is because the 24-hour notice period has not been met and because the lawyer argued that he was not aware of his client’s asylum request.

Chancellor said that the safe passage will be decided “in the coming days”

Chávez remains in the Mexican embassy while he waits for the Peruvian State to process a safe conduct permit that allows him to leave the country. In this regard, the chancellor Hugo de Zela He noted that “the report would be ready in a few days.” According to the statement issued by the Foreign Ministry, the measure adopted by Mexico constitutes a lack of respect for the principles of non-intervention and cooperation between States, which is why diplomatic relations with the president’s country were broken. Claudia Sheinbaum.

Although diplomatic relations were broken, the chancellor specified that the consular offices of both countries will continue to function normally to serve Peruvian citizens in Mexico and Mexicans in Peru. The Mexican chargé d’affaires, Karla Ornela, was officially notified and must leave the country within a peremptory period.
