Betssy Chávez: Foreign Ministry leaves her safe conduct on hold

Betssy Chávez, the former president of the Council of Ministers of the coup plotter Pedro Castillo, is celebrating 71 days of asylum today in the residence of the Mexican embassy in our country, and everything indicates that she will remain that way for at least a while longer.

Foreign Minister Hugo de Zela was consulted today by the press about the situation of the former congresswoman and former prime minister, who at the end of November last year was sentenced by the Special Criminal Chamber of the Supreme Court to 11 years, 5 months and 15 days for the coup d’état of December 7, 2022.

In this context, the head of Torre Tagle responded that “there is still no change” in the government’s position regarding the request for safe passage for Chávez so that he can travel to Mexico.

“At this moment we are precisely consulting with other member countries of the OAS to evaluate our proposal for an inter-American legal committee to evaluate the use of the Caracas Convention and provide us with guidance on how to apply it. We are in the middle of the process,” he stressed.

At the beginning of last November, days after the former premier entered the residence of the Mexican embassy, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement specifying that “by order of the president of the republic, he will present to the member countries of the OAS a proposal to modify the 1954 Caracas Convention, to prevent this misrepresentation of its essence from continuing to occur.”

“A consultation process will immediately begin with other member countries of the OAS to carry out this proposal, whose central objective is that the rule of law is respected by all inhabitants of the Americas,” it was indicated.

Foreign Minister Hugo de Zela, meanwhile, appeared at the beginning of December before the Permanent Council of the Organization of American States where he warned about the incorrect application of the Caracas Convention that regulates diplomatic asylum and maintained that said instrument is being used to protect politicians who have committed common crimes.
