A controversial vacancy
On January 8, 2024, the Congress of Mexico City denied the ratification of Ernestina Godoy as the capital’s prosecutor for a new period of four years. Following this decision, on January 10, 2024, Ulises Lara, former spokesperson for the prosecutor’s office, assumed the position of office manager, despite accusations from politicians from the PAN, PRI and PRD who accused him of politically favoring the Morena party.
At the end of 2024, the Citizen Judicial Council issued a call to restart the selection process for the new head of the local Prosecutor’s Office. Among the candidates, Bertha María Alcalde Luján stood out, whose nomination generated disagreement among opposition deputies due to her family ties with the party in power. During the interviews of the candidates, Mayor Luján responded to these criticisms directly.
“True, I have family relationships, my sister, my mother, who have a very clear link with the party in power today, but it seems to me that that, per se, the fact that I have family ties with people in the party does not “It disqualifies me as a candidate,” she said before members of the Citizen Judicial Council in November 2024.
Despite the controversy, Bertha Alcalde Luján’s nomination passed with a majority of votes in her favor both in the Citizen Judicial Council and in the Justice Administration and Prosecution Commission of the capital’s Congress, where she obtained almost 100% ratings from deputy of Morena and Allied parties.
On December 23, the project was approved by a majority vote before the plenary session of the Mexico City Congress.
