The Czech Republic gave the surprise by beating the United States 2-1 and qualified for the semifinals of the Billie Jean King Cup (former Fed Cup), where they will face Switzerland, who also sealed their ticket this Friday in Glasgow.
The Americans they presented themselves as the favorite team of this edition, but after having beaten Poland they crashed against the Czechs, who prevailed in the two singles matches and won the pulse despite the North Americans keeping the doubles point.
The victory was even more meritorious for the Czech Republic because of the absence of their three best players in the WTA ranking, Petra Kvitova (16th), Barbora Krejcikova (21st) and Marie Bouzkova (26th).
The Czech captain, Petr Pala, played this Friday Marketa VondrousovaRoland Garros 2019 finalist and current 99th in the world, already Katerina Siniakova (47th), giving rest to Karolina Pliskova (32nd), defeated the day before.
Vondrousova surpassed Danielle Collins (14th) by double 6-3, while Siniakova qualified his team by defeating Coco Gauff (7th) by 7-6 (1) and 6-1.
The Czech Republic had won against Poland by the same result (2-1) as the USA, so this Friday’s duel was decisive to know which of the two would retain the leadership and the single ticket up for grabs for the semi-finals.
Swiss, tournament runner-up last year, will be his rival in the penultimate round.
Viktorija Golubic (77th) was preferred this Friday by the Swiss captain, to the detriment of Jil Teichmann (35th), exhausted from playing four hours the day before. Golubic gave the surprise by beating Bianca Andreescu (45th), champion of the US Open 2019, by 2-6, 6-3 and 6-4.
After, belinda bencic (12th) defeated Leylah Fernandez (40th) 6-0 and 7-5.
The other semifinal will be disputed the british hostesses -which eliminated Spain- and Australia.
