Benito Juárez and the real estate sector
The investigations of the Mexico City prosecutor’s office for alleged cases of real estate corruption that involved high-ranking officials in Benito Juárez remain on Morena’s agenda to win supporters in this demarcation towards the 2024 elections.
The Morena leadership in the capital, legislators of this party in the Mexico City congress and the head of government, Claudia Sheinbaum, have spoken on this issue on various occasions.
“They are corrupt: 264 illegal apartments, contracts with shell companies, well, where is the political persecution?” Said the president at a press conference in December 2022, when it was announced that a judge issued an arrest warrant against the former delegate Christian vonRoehrich.
President López Obrador even called the PAN in Benito Juárez “white-collar criminals” and criticized those who, despite investigations in the real estate sector, support this party.
“People, of course they are free, have always voted for this party, as if they were good, honest, austere rulers. Dishonest, immoral people have governed, and in an incredible way, that party always wins, ”said the first president in September 2022.
In this context, Sebastián Ramírez, president of Morena in Mexico City, denied that this intervention by the local and federal executive on Benito Juárez has to do with political persecution, since – in his opinion – it has been shown that there was complicity between the real estate industry and public servants from the administration of Jorge Romero to the current mayor Santiago Taboada.
“I do not think that this has to do with electoral logic, what interests us as a movement, regardless of Benito Juárez, is that there is justice, which is not fair, for the city, that from the mayor’s office the real estate cartel,” he said.
He also ruled out that there are attacks on the middle class by President López Obrador as the PAN led to believe in the 2021 elections.
“Never has the middle class been so benefited as with the government of President López Obrador; The president criticizes those who, coming from below, have delusions of fifi and, earning an average salary, thinks and acts as if he were Claudio X. González, and that is a criticism of conservatism that is based in Benito Juárez, ”he explained.
