The authority confirmed that Aguas, federal representative for the 18th district of Zongolica, was injured. Emergency teams arrived in Tepenacaxtla to give him medical attention.
The first investigations reveal that at least one man on a motorcycle approached him and opened fire on him in Veracruz territory.
According to national media, at least two bullet wounds – one in the head and the other in the chest – caused serious injuries to the member of the Green Party.
Aguas was taken to the clinic of the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) in Zongolica to be treated.
Tonight the president of the board of directors of the Chamber of Deputies, Sergio Gutiérrez Luna, expressed on his social networks:
“I deeply regret the attack suffered by our fellow deputy Benito Aguas. “As president of the Chamber of Deputies, I strongly condemn this act of violence and I trust that justice will be done.”
The Morenista added in his writing: “In this painful moment, I send my support to his family and the people who accompany him in his work. “We will be monitoring his state of health.”
On the deputy’s official social networks, his family shared a statement after the attack, however, they called it an ”accident”:
Meanwhile, PVEM deputy Javier Herrera Borunda, also from Veracruz, expressed that the motive for the attack is unknown and asked the criminal and investigative authorities to clarify the facts.
“From the Legislative Palace of San Lázaro we make a strong call to eradicate political violence in our country and we will be very attentive to the fact that both the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection of the Federal Government, as well as the Secretariat of Public Security of the State of Veracruz, act accordingly.”
