MADRID, Spain.- The Banco Popular de Ahorro, in the municipality of Artemisa, had to close this week due to an outbreak of bedbugs. As explained to the local media the artemiseño the bank manager, noticed the infestation when they went to clean the chairs.
“Immediately we hired, with the Artemisa representation of the Logistics Business Group of the Ministry of Agriculture (GELMA), a fumigation with chemicals that will eradicate bedbugs. Luckily no worker was stung, but since we provide service to the public, we take quick measures to avoid greater evils, ”said the directive.
This situation extends throughout the municipality, as confirmed by Yoleibys Mustelier Cabrera, Bachelor of Hygiene and Epidemiology.
“You can really say that we are facing an outbreak, since there are several cases reported at the end of each week,” said Mustelier Cabrera, in charge of the health inspection in the area corresponding to the Adrián Sansaricq polyclinic.
The specialist indicated that the way to eradicate bedbugs is incineration, but that, logically, “people and institutions are not in a position to burn their objects.”
This week the independent magazine Cuban Time informed through social networks that the Camagüey Art School “Vicentina de la Torre” had also closed, for the same reasons.
In comments to the publication, several users assured that not only the School of Art, but also the hotel, the museum and other places in the surroundings are infested.
In mid-March, Cuban authorities indicated that the province of Santiago de Cuba suffered from a bed bug infestation, but did not have the resources to combat it.
“The shortage of insecticides prevents regular treatments from infested homes,” said medical entomology expert Mirtha Pérez Menzies, who also proposed home solutions that do not lead to eradicating the pest.
