The “Chica CUUN” university beauty contest is an event held every year by the eternal directors of the National Autonomous University of Nicaragua, UNAN-León. In this 2022, students from different faculties were forced to pay for their tickets to participate in this event, which lasts more than two weeks.
The candidates who represent their respective faculties have to be Sandinista militants, who are valued by the perpetual leadership of the CUUN.
“The CUUN knows what you are (politically), if in one of the classrooms you give an opinion that disagrees with the Sandinista party, they immediately add you to the black list that they walk as students they consider to be opponents,” says a young university student consulted. hereby.

Four years ago, a young woman who supported the outgoing mayor Roger Gurdián, who asked the CUUN to be awarded the crown, won. This fact was publicly known throughout León, through social networks, some local radio stations and through comments from the other candidates to win the contest.
In this event, unlike other beauty pageants, the candidates of the different faculties do not need to meet any requirements, because the approval of the CUUN directors and some influential person of the ruling party in Nicaragua is enough.
Waste of 6% in political activity
The eternal leaders of the CUUN manage the portfolio of 6% of the General Budget of the Republic assigned to the universities, which is why they live inventing party activities, forcing the presence of many students and guaranteeing them grades in the subjects they take on that specific day.
A legal and economic adviser, on condition of anonymity, shared information with us that the board of directors of the university center allocates approximately 650,000 córdobas to carry out the conference.
“The day of “Chica CUUN” is a contest that they carry out to waste money, abusing the public resources of that 6%. I wonder: What academic contribution does this event have? How many university students are leaving without a scholarship for spending that money on themselves? Any! It is a facade to continue blackmailing and indoctrinating university students”, a former UNAN-León worker, dismissed immediately after the social outbreak, shares with this medium.

The CUUN is the political arm of the regime within UNAN-León, it is the body that decides who can or cannot teach classes, hire or fire teachers at the alma mater; prohibits academic freedom; they order teachers to give good grades to students who participate in party activities.
“The CUUN kicked me out for refusing to grade social communication students who weren’t there the entire semester for being involved in party activities,” says professor Salomón Manzanares, expelled from this university on orders from the university center.
Manzanares, stood out as the best journalism teacher in León, fought fiercely in defense of university autonomy. He was the first journalist imprisoned in Nicaragua as a result of the 2018 protests. He is now in exile.
The current president of the university center is Donaldo Hernández, who also blackmails and instills fear in students and teachers who do not obey his orders.
Last Monday, twelve UNAN-León workers were arbitrarily dismissed; including teachers and officials. According to sources consulted from the CUUN, the expulsion order was issued.
