The Soccer World Cup is in Uruguay as part of a tour that covers the 32 countries qualified for the Qatar 2022 World Cup.
According to the protocol, only the presidents of these nations and players and former world champion players can touch the cup. In Uruguay, the national authority that came to receive it was the Vice President of the Republic, Beatriz Argimón, who declined that privilege as a result of the existing cabal according to which touching the cup would be bad luck for the country of whoever touches it.
«I was not going to touch it because when I left the Executive Tower a group of journalists who knew I was coming here expressly told me not to touch the Cup because it is bad luck. What’s more, I came here and they sent me messages reminding me not to touch it, so when we had to be next to the Cup, what was I going to do if they told me I could touch it, but luckily there was a historic player who has accompanied the tour and he is in charge of lifting the Cup”, Argimón commented to the press present.
Beyond this episode, the Vice President stressed that the presence of the cup in the country “has to do with our richest history, but also with our hope and the future.”
Finally, the person in charge of lifting the cup was former Brazilian soccer player Lucimar da Silva Ferreira, better known as Lúcio, world champion with Brazil in Korea-Japan 2002.
The mayor of Montevideo, Carolina Cosse was also present at the event but preferred not to make predictions about the results of the next World Cup.
