MIAMI, United States. — The political prisoner Yandier García Labrada, who was sentenced to five years in prison for protesting in a queue in the town of Manatí, province of Las Tunas, was beaten and taken to a punishment cell last weekend, he informed Radio Television Marti Iran Almaguer Labrada, brother of the activist.
García Labrada, a member of the Christian Liberation Movement (MCL), is in the prison known as La Carbonera, in the municipality of Colombia. There he would have been the victim of a beating for denouncing the defenselessness of the prisoners and the impunity of the jailers.
“Last Saturday, in the afternoon-night, my brother Yandier García Labrada was put in a punishment cell, he was mistreated; they hit him with sticks, the sticks prison killers use,” he told Radio Television Marti the brother of the political prisoner.
Iran Almaguer Labrada specified that the repression against inmates in Cuban prisons is increasing, especially when it comes to opponents and human rights activists.
“These murderers bludgeoned him and put him in a punishment cell. Strong measures must be taken against them because they are destroying the people and all the people who are against them,” said the activist.
Almaguer Labrada indicated that his brother was taken out of the punishment cell last Monday.
It is not the first time that the political prisoner has been punished by the regime’s jailers, since throughout 2021 he suffered the suspension of family visits and phone calls on more than one occasion.
Yandier García Labrada was sentenced in 2021 to five years in prison for the crimes of contempt, attack on authority and spread of epidemics in “a telematic trial full of irregularities”, as the Christian Liberation Movement itself denounced at the time.
