The Minister of the Environment, Miguel Ángel Espichán, launched this weekend in the district of La Punta the national campaign “Salvaplayas 2026”, a key initiative to promote clean, safe, orderly and sustainable beaches along the entire Peruvian coast..
The ceremony, held in front of the Grau sea, brought together neighbors, local authorities and promoters. Espicán emphasized that success lies not in the amount of waste collected, but in the change in citizen habits, urging us to reject single-use plastics such as bags, straws and Styrofoam in favor of reusable materials.
The event included the swearing-in of Beach Rescue Squadron and the unveiling of a mural on the Pardo boardwalk, one of the beaches distinguished by Minam, where the district stands out for its high environmental standards in Cantolao and Malecón Pardo.
Mayor Ramón Ricardo Garay León supported the initiative, recalling that this distinction is the result of years of joint effort between authorities and neighbors, and reaffirmed the local commitment to coastal conservation as a model that can be replicated at the national level.
Espichán warned about the generation of more than 886 tons of waste annually in Peru, of which only 10% is recycled, with the rest contaminating landfills, seas and threatening more than 3,800 marine species from microplastics.
According to a report from Channel Nthe campaign was activated in 11 coastal regions such as Tumbes, Lambayeque, La Libertad, Áncash, Lima, Arequipa and Tacna, through environmental education sessions promoted by Minam’s EDUCA program, which involves local governments, civil organizations and promoters.
