According to the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio) the young woman was rescued by the park’s staff. The institute expressed its solidarity with the girl and her family and highlighted that shark attacks are rare in the place, “there are rules regarding the times and places allowed to use the beach”.

Through a note, the State Committee for Monitoring Incidents with Sharks (Cemit), an organ of the Pernambuco Social Defense Department (SDS), informed that it will meet in the coming days to evaluate the case. “Only after analyzing documents will it be possible to identify the species of shark,” the agency said.

“The victim, hit in the right leg, is an 8-year-old girl who was in Baía de Sueste, a beach that is a federal marine park and is managed by the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio). Until then, the youngest victims recorded in the state were 14 years old. However, the occurrence of this Friday can only be included in the official statistics after analysis by Cemit”.

According to the agency, so far there have been six incidents with sharks in Fernando de Noronha, with no deaths, between 2015 and 2020.

“The first took place on December 21, 2015 in Baía de Sueste, the same beach as this Friday’s occurrence. The victim was a 32-year-old male bather who had an injury to his right arm. The others were on Leão, Conceição, Bode and Cacimba beaches (two cases). Of the six victims, all were adults, being two bathers and four surfers. All cases took place between December and March.”

The girl, who is from São Paulo and was with her father at the time of the attack, was treated at a hospital in the archipelago and then taken on a rescue aircraft to Recife. There is no information about her health status.
