“We were pioneers in digital and mobile transformation, and now we are entering the era of AI with greater ambition. Our alliance with OpenAI accelerates the native integration of artificial intelligence throughout the bank to create a more intelligent, proactive and fully personalized experience, anticipating the needs of each client,” said Carlos Torres Vila, president of BBVA, during the announcement at OpenAI’s headquarters in San Francisco, together with Sam Altman, CEO and co-founder of the technology company.

The BBVA-OpenAI alliance to strengthen banking
Unlike other collaborations between both companies, this time OpenAI participates in the creation of solutions for BBVA to accelerate its transformation strategy applied to AI.
With this, BBVA will have preferential access to the most advanced technological capabilities, including expert talent and the most advanced AI models, to work side by side with its engineering, research and solutions development teams.
One of its bets is the creation of a conversational and intelligent assistant to accompany clients. Other plans are to develop solutions to help business managers serve customers in a personalized way.
“BBVA is a clear example of how a large financial institution can adopt artificial intelligence with real ambition and speed. With the expansion of our collaboration, BBVA will integrate our AI into the core of its products and operations to completely improve the banking experience of its customers,” said Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI.
Banking services from ChatGPT
According to the announcement, BBVA is working on integrating its product and service offering directly from ChatGPT, “allowing any user to interact with the bank from OpenAI’s conversational assistant.”
The bank already showed a test of its ‘app’ integrated into ChatGPT for digital banks in Italy and Germany, at the beginning of this December. This version is designed to respond to informational queries about BBVA products and services, but the experience is planned to evolve into a “digital companion” that provides guidance with clear guidelines and conversations to make financial decisions.
For this model, pilot tests were implemented in the GPT-5 Chat model.
OpenAI developed a ‘digital double’ of employees
Among the objectives of the alliance is the creation of systems to streamline the risk analysis process and transform the bank’s operations such as software development and routine tasks. OpenAI plans to create an ‘alter ego’ or digital double of employees so that they can execute personalized tasks for them, always under internal authorization and control.
BBVA will extend the use of ChatGPT Enterprise to its more than 120,000 employees, which represents one of the largest corporate implementations of AI globally. The mass deployment comes after moderate adoption of the tool with 11,000 employees to increase productivity.
“80% of users access the assistant daily and claim to save an average of three hours a week on routine tasks,” BBVA states in its statement.
