The Minister of Economy, Silvina Batakisdescribed as “very constructive” the meeting he held this Monday afternoon with the Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Kristalina Georgiev.
Through his account on the social network Twitter, Batakis said: “We had a very constructive meeting. with @kgeorgieva this afternoon in Washington.”
The minister’s message came just a few minutes after Georgieva, also via Twitter, will use similar terms to comment on the meeting.
The head of the IMF said that “another productive meeting with the minister @sbatakis. We welcome your initial efforts to strengthen the fiscal sustainability and we agree on the importance of the decisive implementation of the program to address the economic and social challenges of #Argentina”.
This was the first face-to-face meeting that Batakis and Georgieva had after the virtual contact they had on July 6, after the minister was sworn in as the new head of the Palacio de Hacienda.

The minister was accompanied by the Argentine ambassador, Jorge Argüello; the Vice Minister of Economy, Karina Angeletti, and the head of the Chancellery of the Argentine Embassy in the United States, Adrián Nador.
The meeting was part of Batakis’s trip to the United States, which has among its main objectives that its interlocutors “Listen and find out how the new official thinks”In addition to exposing the action guidelines that the Argentine Government will take in economic matters, Ambassador Argüello told Télam this morning.
Georgieva was very interested in meeting the new Argentine minister, since “she had planned to take vacations this week” and decided to postpone them in order to receive Batakis, sources from the multilateral organization told Télam.
In addition to the meeting with the Managing Director of the IMF, Batakis had a working lunch with Ilan Goldfajn, director of the multilateral organization for the Western Hemisphere; Luis Cubeddu, head of the Mission for Argentina; and Julie Kozack, deputy director of the Western Hemisphere Department, who will become deputy director of the Fund’s European Department in September.
