Former Cuban player and coach Máximo García, who shone in professional leagues in baseball in several countries of the region during the 50s and 60s of the last century, he died this Wednesday in Havana, according to official media on the island.
According to a note of the National Baseball Commission published in the sports portal HitMax -as he was known-, worked as an amateur and professional player during the aforementioned period «obtaining outstanding results as a pitcher and first baseman in leagues in Cuba, Mexico and Nicaragua fundamentally».

García played in the island’s championships until 1961, when the professional league ended. At the international level, he remained active until 1966, “time in which he already embraced the tasks demanded by the nascent revolutionary ball,” the text states.
Once retired, the man from Matanzas continued to be linked to Cuban baseball as coach of the Azucareros team in the I National Series and dedicated a lot of effort, over the years, to teaching new generations of athletes at different levels.
The publication refers that Max García also transmitted his baseball knowledge as a coach in several nations, including Brazil, South Africa and Panama.
He also collaborated with the preparation of the Cuban national team that starred in the historic cap against the Baltimore Orioles in 1999, of the MLBwhich ended with a victory by side.
He is remembered for his performance as vice president of the National Commission for Attention to Athletes, an entity linked to the National Institute of Sports, Physical Education and Recreation (Inder) whose main function is to ensure the well-being of those who were glories of the Cuban sports movement.
Through the statement, the national baseball commission on the island extended condolences for the death to the family, friends and colleagues of the former outstanding athlete.
