Minister Luís Roberto Barroso, of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Hospital Sírio Libanês, in Brasília, due to an intestinal obstruction.
According to a note released by the Federal Supreme Court (STF), Barroso underwent surgery to close an incisional hernia at the end of February. After the procedure, he participated in a plenary session via videoconference, on March 1, but soon after, he needed to be operated on twice more due to three episodes of intestinal obstruction.
According to the Supreme Court, “the minister’s recovery is as expected”. Also according to the text, “soon, he should leave the ICU, where he is to facilitate medical observation”.
Currently, Barroso is vice president of the STF, and should occupy the presidency of the Court from October this year, when the current president, Justice Rosa Weber, reaches the age of compulsory retirement.
Born in Rio de Janeiro and a career lawyer, the minister was appointed to the Supreme Court by President Dilma Rousseff in 2013. He is also a professor at the State University of Rio de Janeiro (Uerj), the same institution from which he graduated with a doctorate in law public.
